Our Why
ACCORDING TO AUTISM SPEAKS, AUTISM REFERS TO A BROAD RANGE OF CONDITIONS CHARACTERIZED BY CHALLENGES WITH SOCIAL SKILLS, REPETITIVE BEHAVIORS, SPEECH AND NONVERBAL COMMUNICATION.
IT IS ESTIMATED THAT 5.4 MILLION ADULTS IN THE UNITED STATES ARE DIAGNOSED WITH AUTISM.
OVER THE NEXT DECADE, AN ESTIMATED 700,000-1,116,000 OF THOSE INDIVIDUALS WILL AGE INTO ADULTHOOD AND OUT OF SCHOOL-BASED AUTISM SERVICES.
Transitioning to Adulthood:
-
Entering new environments, new social experiences, and new routines
-
New opportunities for self-advocacy and independence
-
Consider own interests and make choices about continuing education, choosing a career, or become part of a community.
-
Challenges: housing, education, employment, financial support, care, aging out of services, and social connections.
THE AUTISM HOUSING NETWORK STATES ONLY 19% OF AUTISTIC ADULTS HAVE EVER LIVED OUTSIDE THEIR FAMILY HOME.
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THEIR
PARENTS ARE NO LONGER HERE?
MISSION STATEMENT
Walter R. Musty Homes for Autism was founded in 2013 to help address the housing crisis for those with autism and other disabilities. We helped build a 24/7 supervised group home in 2017 and are working to help more families get the comfort and peace of mind they deserve. Our mission is to create the first all-inclusive farm community in WNY that provides opportunities for people of all abilities to thrive.
We cannot stress how necessary housing for those with autism and other disabilities is. We are ready to hit the ground running and help pave the way for others whether it be guiding families through the group home building process or making connections with our farm community project.
If you are serious about building a group home for your loved one with autism, it is best to team-up with 5 other families with the same vision and then reach out to us. While there is little help from NYS right now, you still have options.
If you are interested in our farm community project, Black Water Acres, you can reach out to our project partner, Arc Erie County.

RECENT NYS HOUSING NEWS:
(updated 4-6-22)
"Assemblyman Thomas Abinati and NYS Senator John Mannion have introduced new legislative bills for consideration:Bills A9492 and S8521 respectively. These identical bills relate to the creation of an innovative supportive housing program for persons with developmental disabilities. We believe these bills may effectively address some of the housing barriers experienced by our IDD population, assist in addressing the housing crisis among this population, and are clearly a nonpartisan issue throughout the state."
